Starting the New Year off on the Right Foot

For most of us, the start of a new year is a time for looking forward, implementing plans and making resolutions that most likely won’t last the month of January. For me, I enjoy starting a new year by taking a few moments to reflect on individuals who passed away the previous year but made a lasting impression on my life.

On the grandest scale, I paid particular attention to the passing of Nelson Mandela who defined the words “you can” to me. Seth Godin said it best after his passing when he stated, “You can make a difference. You can stand up to insurmountable forces. You can put up with far more than you think you can. Your lever is far longer than you imagine it is, if you choose to use it. If you don’t require the journey to be easy or comfortable or safe, you can change the world.”

These are truly inspiring words to start the New Year with.

Growing up in New York in the 70s and 80s, former Mayor Ed Koch impacted my view of the city and the way that politicians handled the spotlight. “If you agree with me on 9 out of 12 issues, vote for me. If you agree with me on 12 out of 12 issues, see a psychiatrist.” Classic Ed Koch.

For those of us involved in a particular industry, there may be individuals who passed that touched your heart or impacted your views of the world that you service.

For me, in the accounts receivable management industry, that person was Pat Carroll. I was fortunate that Pat always made time to meet with me at trade shows and returned my phone calls. He spent decades with market leader Payco American before moving onto other ARM ventures and I found his perspective invaluable.

I encourage you to find a moment to reflect on those who made an impact in your life who passed away this past year. I think you will be glad you did.
