Citibank to Hire 1,400 Debt Collectors in Indonesia

Citibank said Thursday that it will be recruiting up to 1,400 employees in Indonesia to focus on in-house debt collection, according to a story in The Jakarta Post. Most of the work to be done by the new hires had been previously outsourced to third part debt collection agencies.

“This is beneficial for all parties and strengthens control and management in this area. It also reflects our commitment to providing a better service to our customers,” Shariq said in a statement sent to The Jakarta Post.

The move comes after Indonesia’s central bank said earlier in the week that Citi’s debt collection practices had violated that country’s protocols governing the use of third party collectors. A spokesperson for the central bank noted that responsibility for debt collection falls on the original creditor.
