Georgia Debt Collection Laws: Georgia on My Mind

Mark Moore oversees the firm’s collection practice. He has dedicated his entire 20-year career to representing creditors and protecting creditors’ rights. Born in New York, Mark was raised in both New York and Maine, before moving south to attend college. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia, and he went on to obtain his J.D. from Georgia State University College of Law. He is a member of the Commercial Law League of America (CLLA), the National Association of Retail Collection Attorneys (NARCA), the Debt Buyers’ Association (DBA) and ACA International.

“Over the years, I have found that, for the most part, debtors truly want to pay the money they owe,” Mark says. “I enjoy finding unique ways to locate and collect money for my clients from debtors who refuse to work with the creditors amicably.” Whether it’s negotiating with a debtor prior to suit, litigating a collection case, or aggressively pursuing the collection of judgments, Mark and his staff take pride in achieving and exceeding their clients’ goals and expectations.

One thing creditors should know about collecting in Georgia is that the state has 159 counties, and each county sets its own filing fees. “Having a knowledgeable collection staff to determine proper venue is a must,” Mark says.

Mark, his wife, Susanna, and their two children live in Woodstock, GA, which is about 25 miles north of Atlanta. When he’s not working, he enjoys participating in all sports. He’s a coach of a traveling baseball team, as well as a school basketball team.

Outside of work, Lazega & Johanson is very involved with charitable work. They call it “L&J gives back.” Every 60 days they select a new charity to give their time, money or efforts to. They range from donating clothes to homeless shelters, books to libraries, hosting blood drives, serving food at food kitchens, etc. Each year they select an attorney who is in charge of reviewing and selecting the charities they will work with during that year.
