Supreme Court Upholds Healthcare Reform Insurance Mandate; Considers Penalty a Tax

The U.S. Supreme Court Thursday upheld, in large part, President Obama’s healthcare reform bill, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).

Chief Justice John Roberts sided with the more liberal justices in the case, which turned the case to a 5-4 majority decision. The dissent was written by Justice Kennedy and joined by the three most conservative justices.

Most of the provisions of the bill were declared Constitutional. But a new rule that would strike funding from states refusing to participate in an expansion of Medicaid was thrown out.
