Kansas AG Beefs Up Consumer Protection Prosecution Unit

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced Wednesday that a former U.S. Attorney is joining his office as a prosecutor in the consumer protection division.

Jackie Williams, who currently serves as Topeka city attorney, will leave that position later this month and join Schmidt’s office as an assistant attorney general for consumer protection beginning July 1.

“Jackie Williams is among the most respected career prosecutors in Kansas,” Attorney General Schmidt said in a press release. “His experience and skills will be tremendous additions to our consumer protection efforts at the attorney general’s office.”

Williams served 23 years as a career federal prosecutor for Kansas based principally in Wichita. He capped his federal prosecution career by serving as United States Attorney for Kansas from 1996 to 2001.

The consumer protection unit is responsible for enforcing laws designed to protect Kansas consumers. The press release specifically notes that the division has purview over debt collection practices.
